Kings Stumble Out of the Gate, Fall 8-4 to the Avalanche in Opener

The season is one game old and Tía Rosa already needs a second cup of café.

Ay, mijos. We turn on the TV for the season opener, the whole family still arguing about who gets the good chair, and this is how we start?

The Kings opened their season on the road against the Colorado Avalanche and came home with an 8-4 loss, per ESPN. Eight goals. I had to recount on my fingers.

A lot of that damage came from one man. Nathan MacKinnon scored twice for Colorado, including during a four-goal second period that's the kind of stretch that makes you mute the TV and go check on the rice. Per ESPN, he even capped his night with a rare fight — not something you see from him every day.

The bigger question

Eight goals against isn't a one-man problem, mijo. That's a defense that needs to find itself, and fast, before this tía starts pacing the kitchen every third night of the week.

Four goals scored is something — at least somebody showed up to eat at this table. But when the other team hangs eight on you to open the year, you don't get to feel good about the four. Effort counts with me, and I'll always give credit where it's due. Still, qué barbaridad.

If you want to relive it — and honestly, why would you — ESPN has the game highlights posted too.

One game doesn't make a season, I know, I know. But my nerves don't know that yet. We'll be back on the couch for the next one, cousins arguing and all, hoping for better. This is a long year, mijos. Let's not panic. Yet.
